Description

The Pulsar Thermion XP50 thermal riflescope’s lightweight magnesium-alloy body mounts easily with standard 30mm rings.  Beyond its looks, the Thermion XP50 is anything but traditional.  It boasts a crisp 640×480 microbolometer resolution, 17μm pixel pitch, 8 user selectable color palettes displayed on a full-color 1024×768 HD AMOLED display, and a jaw-dropping heat-signature detection range of nearly 2000 yards.  Additional Thermion XP50 features include picture-in-picture function, 15 user selectable reticles in up to 4 colors (black, red, white and green).  You can capture live hunting action with integrated still and video recording with audio on 16 gigs of internal memory with a single button press.  You can also link your scope to a mobile device so others can watch the action via the scope’s built in Wi-Fi network and the free Pulsar Stream Vision app.  The display’s 50Hz frame rate provides seamless fluid motion imaging and an onboard rechargeable battery pack powers the unit for hours of extended use. The XP50 has a native 1.9 x magnification and will digitally zoom to 15x.  It has a 50 mm objective lens and weighs 31.7 ounces.  The XP 50 and is recoil rated to handle up to .375 H&H and 12-gauge shotgun fire. I’m extremely excited to bring Pulsar on board and this is one of the more exciting products out there that so many of us have wanted to try out.  Many states allow predator hunting and hog hunting at night and I can’t think of a better way to thin out the yote population than taking their eyesight out of the equation.  The detection range of these scopes is amazing, and the ease of sight in is a great feature that will have you up and running in no time.

A lot of people struggle with the streaming app.  I have used pretty extensively now with all of these scopes.  On iOS (iPhones), you will experience difficulty downloading video footage from the scope to your phone.  However, I have been able to view the viewfinder on my phone and record video and still photos directly on my phone with the app.  It is disappointing this is still an issue on most of the scopes I’ve used.  Android users report better results.  If you try to upload a video from the memory on the scope to an iPhone, it may start, then hang up and you will often see connection lost.  At that point, you will not be able to reconnect to the scope’s wifi.  You’ll have to shut down the scope and your phone and start over.  Knowing this, I now just try to have my phone handy so I can record video and pictures. 

If that’s a deal breaker for you, you may want to pick up a junk android phone to download photos and video to the scope.  I wouldn’t let it stop you from enjoying the awesome power of these thermal optics though.  They are an absolute blast to use and they can be an effective tool for scouting and hunting day or night depending on conditions.  There is a learning curve to get the most out of thermal optics in various conditions by using the settings, but after a little tinkering you will get setting you’re happy with and you won’t have to adjust it unless you get into a weird condition where you need more or less contrast to see clearly (fog, hot daytime, etc…).

Since you are effectively blind at night without the thermal, it is far better to keep the scope at its lowest power setting to get the widest field of view possible.  That’s why most of them have very low power settings at the low end (by rifle scope standards).  The picture in picture magnified mode is a nice way to allow finer aiming while still having the benefit of the wide field of view.  

I find myself going outside a couple times a week just to see what’s in the field across the road and to check stuff out.  I am definitely going to add thermal to my personal gear set in the form of at least one rifle scope and possibly a monocular or binocular I can carry when hunting to scan before daylight and after dark and see what comes sneaking out of the shadows. 

These are really hot items and are rarely in stock anywhere, so if you want to take the leap into thermal, I think the Thermion scopes offer a tremendous blend of performance and functionality combined with a traditional form factor that mounts with standard 30 mm rings you likely already own.  We may set some of these up to rent with rings already installed for picatinny rail mounting if there is enough interest, so send us an email to sales@rgunsngear.com & let us know if you are interested in renting.
