The 8×42 Swarovski NL Pure sports an ultra-wide field of view, long eye relief, and large exit pupil in a compact and feather-light magnesium housing. The 8×42 NL’s extra-low dispersion HD glass elements and proprietary optical coatings deliver impressive image quality and durability. These are fantastic for hunting in dense cover to maximize the amount of area you see at any given time so you can pick up an ear flicker or a rack moving in a sea of branches. The ergonomics and handling of this binocular have to be felt to be understood – there’s nothing like them. The optional forehead rest is a game-changer for eyeglass wearers.
There’s been more hype around the release of the Swarovski NL pure than about any binocular I can recall since the Swarovski EL was released. It’s hard to believe it, but the NL pure actually lives up to, and in my opinion, exceeds the hype!!
The field of view of the NL series binoculars is not like the traditional round window you are accustomed to looking through with a binocular or spotting scope. The view is more oval shaped and better matches your eye’s natural field of view. The glassing experience is further enhanced because the typical black edge around the image almost disappears as you glass, so you’ll feel like you’re looking just looking around at the world with your own 8X vision. Just when I thought binoculars couldn’t really get any better, Swarovski has set a new benchmark that will force other companies to rethink their current designs.
I initially scoffed at the padded forehead rest, thinking everybody knows you don’t want to touch the binocular with your head when it’s mounted on a tripod, but after using it hand-held for a few minutes I realized the silly rest I despise on the BTX actually found a perfect home on a hand-held binocular. I am an eyeglass wearer, and pushing the padded rest against my forehead instead of the eyecups into the lenses of my glasses or into your eye sockets is far more comfortable and stable. Now I won’t be scratching my eyeglasses with dusty eye-cups or pushing my eyeglass lenses into my sweaty eyelids that leave smudges and require constant cleaning. That’s a big win for me and my fellow four-eyed brethren.
The comfort and stability added with this simple device is a significant innovation and makes it a must have accessory. Now if we can just get some delivered to us so you can see for yourself!
If you’re sensitive to rolling ball effect with field flattener lenses, I think you will find it very hard to pick up when panning with the NL pure. It’s not something that bothers me, but I notice it with the Swarovski EL’s. Perhaps the edges are so far out that it’s not noticeable to me with the NL Pure.
The NL stands for Need a Lawyer (when your wife finds out you spent $3G’s on binoculars). If you would prefer to stay married, treat yourself on your next hunt and rent a set of NL’s. If you decide to make them a keeper, we know how to keep a secret.
