The Swarovski TLS APO 43mm Digiscoping Lens for ATX/STX spotting scopes is a proprietary adapter used to connect a DSLR camera body with a full-size sensor to the viewing module of of the spotter, effectively using the scope as a lightweight, waterproof, super-telephoto lens. When the TLS APO, T2 adapter, and camera body are mounted to the spotting scope eyepiece, users are treated to a truly stunning digiscoping experience. The TLS APO has a 43mm lens that perfectly aligns the camera sensor with the focal plane of the transmitted image. Regardless of the camera used, you will capture contrast-rich and sharp video and still images using the premium optics of your Swarovski spotting scope.

Digiscoping with your DSLR is a great way to capture awesome photos and get more out of them in post processing by leveraging the better dynamic range and RAW capabilities of larger sensors present in DSLR’s.  For the same reasons, they also shoot great video!

There are a few things to consider when digiscoping with a DSLR:

  1. When you attach a heavy camera to a long, heavy optic, you need an exceptionally stable tripod and head combination to get good photographs – particularly if there’s any wind blowing.  Therefore, we recommend renting one of our premium tripods like the RRS TFCT 34 with Anvil 30 head
  2. You’re shooting a super telephoto lens at focal lengths which are minimum 1075mm or 1290mm (11 – 14x zoom) depending on the objective size AND you have a relatively small effective aperture of 11.2 – 16.5.  Hence shutter speeds tend to be slow.  Therefore, you’ll need to crank up the ISO in order to get your shutter speed up to a minimum of 1/100 and preferably 1/250 or faster to get sharp images.  Higher ISO will induce noise to your images at a certain point, so experiment to see where your personal tolerance for noise is and shoot there or one step lower ISO.  
  3. There is a balance rail available to help minimize cantilevered weight on your tripod.
  4. Use a remote shutter release or use the timer shutter release to avoid causing image blur from depressing the shutter button.  Mirror up and quiet shutter release modes can reduce camera shake attributed to shutter “slap”.  
  5. You will have to manually focus the image with the scope – zoom in with your camera’s live view to ensure you get tack sharp focus.
  6. It’s going to take a little practice to get the hang of it, so get out there and start shooting!  Before you know it you’ll be capturing some really solid images.
  7. Shooting Video with your DSLR is often the best way to enjoy digiscoping when starting out.
